Domestic Violence Archives

Domestic violence defense strategy depends on facts, circumstances of the case

Domestic violence charges seem to get a lot of attention when there is a professional athlete involved. In a sense, this is understandable since athletes are public figures and we expect them to be good role models. On the other hand, the kind of attention domestic violence allegations and charges generate when a sports figure is involved is not always fair.

Nick Gordon domestic violence arrest: could it impact investigation into Bobbi Kristina’s death?

Many of our readers may remember hearing or reading a couple years ago about the death of Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of Whitney Houston. Her death was tragic not only because she was young and because of its proximity to her mother’s death in 2012, but also because Brown’s boyfriend Nick Gordon was accused of playing a part in her death.

Reports highlight increases in domestic violence in FL, nationwide

According to a report recently released by the National Domestic Violence Hotline, there has been a significant increase in domestic violence calls nationwide involving immigration-related concerns. Specifically, the report found that since the rise of Donald Trump, there has been an increase in the number of domestic violence calls in which abusers have been threatening to call federal immigration authorities.

Experienced attorney can help defend against domestic violence charges, protect firearms rights

In our last post, we looked briefly at a proposal that would require the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to notify local law enforcement within one week of background check denials associated with the attempted purchase of firearms. Firearms background check proposals would impact those convicted of domestic violence

Access to firearms is an important issue, particularly in the context of domestic violence and abuse. Authorities are keen to address the issue in order to better protect domestic violence victims. At present, Florida lawmakers are reportedly considering legislation that would provide extra protections for potential victims and extra burdens for those who have been convicted of domestic violence.

Last time, we began discussing the fact that the Fort Lauderdale shooter Esteban Santiago had, prior to the shooting, been arrested and charged in connection with a domestic violence incident. As we pointed, out, it is easy for journalists and the public at large to demonize those accused of domestic violence, and the way some commentators try to draw straight lines between domestic violence incidents and mass shootings is evidence of the bias against domestic violence defendants.

Was Florida shooter’s 2016 domestic violence incident a warning sign?

Raising alarm about domestic violence is always a popular thing to do, and journalists reporting on the topic know how to play on the fears of their readers. This can be seen in a recent Vox article discussing the fact that Esteban Santiago, the man who killed at least five people and wounded 45 others in the Fort Lauderdale shooting last week, was arrested and charged with domestic violence in January of 2016. This, the article insinuates, should have been a red flag for authorities.

Former NFL quarterback reaches plea deal in domestic violence case

Some of our Florida readers may be familiar with the name Johnny Manziel, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback who played with the team for two seasons. At the beginning of the year, Manziel was targeted by the Dallas Police Department in a domestic violence investigation involving a former girlfriend.
